Dodoma Wine Tour: The Pride of the region

From €110

Revelation for all wine lovers from around the globe! Did you know that Tanzania is the second-largest African wine producer, after famous South Africa? We didn’t know either, until we established our company office in Dodoma, far from all world-famous and crowded tourist destinations. Welcome to Dodoma, the capital of the country in central Tanzania to taste organic wine from the vineyards that the region is rightly proud of.

Dodoma – Nkulabi – Dodoma

  • Driving distance: 75 km
  • Driving time: 1.5 hrs
  • Activities: Vineyards Visit; Winemaking Process Tour; Wine Tastings; Farm Lunch (optional)

Our driver will pick you from Dodoma Airport, if you arrive by a morning flight from Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam, or from your hotel in Dodoma (we can assist you with booking your accommodation in Dodoma). A scenic 50-minute drive to the south will take you to Nkulabi village, which is the home of Mr & Mrs Semwenda family who are the owners of this beautiful vineyard that produces the famous ecological Dane Wine.

Dodoma region is the only grape-growing region in the country, which makes this yet unexplored destination a dream for wine lovers. Even for non-drinkers, this tour is going to be an extremely informative experience: you will discover the history and passion behind a family-owned wine farm with vineyard landscapes, winemaking process, wine tastings experiences and a gift wine bottle. This is a very deep and personal tour that will get you into connection with local farmers as close as it gets.

Wine tours can be enjoyed all year round, with February/March and August/September being harvest seasons. The most common grape varietals in the Dodoma wine region are Chenin Blanc, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and a variety named for a Dodoma sub-region, Makutupora. The Makutupora is a local dry red grape that grows in dry earth, sandy soil with low humidity. There are two harvest seasons a year. Initially wine production and grape growing was introduced here by Italian missionaries.

If your timing allows you to enjoy a full day with us, make sure to book our special farm lunch (optional) with local freshly cooked dishes by “wagogo mamas”, friendly women from the gogo tribe which dominates the region. And, for sure, with more wine to complement the meal.

After the end of the tour, our driver will drive you back to your accommodation in Dodoma (we can assist you with the booking), or will drop you off in Dodoma Airport, if you fly to Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar by an evening flight. Alternatively, you can proceed with us to Iringa, which is a gateway to the enormous and remote majestic Ruaha National Park.
