Day 0. Arrival in Moshi and climbing preparations

Welcome to Kilimanjaro! We will pick you from Kilimanjaro International Airport. Our driver brings you to your hotel in Moshi for a well deserved rest after a long flight. Today is all about relaxing, meeting your fellow climbers. Meeting the team, checking your gear and exploring the town. 

Look at the giant mountain in the distance, who waits for you. You will get your briefing from the mountain guide today. You will also have time to rent any gear that you forgot at home. Tomorrow your expedition starts. This is the day to gather your energy and enjoy leisure time.

Day 1. Lemosho Gate (2360 m) - Mti Mkubwa Camp (2780 m)

Welcome to Kilimanjaro! After breakfast we will pick you from your hotel in Moshi, and transfer you to Lemosho Gate. Your adventure begins here with a registration with the national park authorities. From there, you embark on a moderately steep hike to Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp), keeping an eye out for monkeys and interesting birds. Upon arrival, you find your tents set up, with hot tea and washing water ready for you.

Day 2. Mti Mkubwa Camp (2780 m) - Shira-2 Camp (3900 m)

Today’s long trek begins on a narrow trail, gradually ascending through trees to reach the Shira Plateau. Enjoy stunning views of the mountain and plains below as you cross the Shira Ridge (ca. 3600 m). After a few hours, you’ll stop for lunch at Shira Camp 1. The final section of the hike, approximately three hours, includes a 250-meter climb past surreal Senecio plants, some over 8 meters tall. Upon reaching the camp, relax with coffee and tea, and enjoy a nourishing 3-course meal. As the sun sets, catch the summit glowing in the afternoon light.

Day 3. Shira Camp 2 (3900 m) – Lava Tower (4640 m) – Barranco Camp (3960 m)

This day you will gain 700m in altitude, reaching 4640m before descending to sleep at Barranco Camp, just 60m higher than your previous night’s camp, aiding acclimatization. The day starts with a long uphill trek towards Lava Tower Hut (4640m), where the landscape shifts to a rocky alpine desert. Later, the path descends into the Barranco Valley, home to giant Senecio and Lobelia plants. After six to seven hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at the stunning Barranco Camp.

Day 4. Barranco Camp (3960 m) – Karanga Camp (4035 m)

Today begins with climbing the Barranco Wall, which looks more challenging than it is, though some sections require a firm grip. Enjoy the breathtaking views from the top.

The route then follows the mountain ridge into and out of the Karanga Valley. After lunch, you’ll reach Karanga Camp, offering fantastic views of the southern glacier of Kibo and the Kibo summit.

Day 5. Karanga Camp (4035 m) – Barafu Camp (4640 m)

Day 5 on Kilimanjaro involves a few hours of hiking through a desolate, rocky, moon-like landscape. The relatively easy trek leads steadily uphill to Barafu Camp, situated on a narrow ridge with clear views of Mawenzi Peak. You’ll follow a trail through the afro-alpine desert, reaching Barafu Camp at 4640m. Spend the rest of the day relaxing and preparing your daypack for tonight’s summit attempt. An early supper will be served; eat and drink plenty, then try to sleep. You’ll be woken around midnight to begin your ascent to the summit.

Day 6. Barafu Camp (4640 m) – Uhuru Peak (5895 m) – Mweka Camp (3080 m)

The most important day when your long-time dreams turn into reality. Just after midnight, you set off in the dark and cold, climbing the frozen volcanic dust by headlamp towards Stella Point on the crater rim—a six-hour ascent. As the sun rises, you’ll reach Stella Point. An hour or two later, you’ll stand on Uhuru Peak, the highest point of the crater. Well done, you are at the Roof of Africa!

After taking pictures and celebrating, you’ll begin the steep, dusty descent. The volcanic ash will have thawed by then. After a short tea break at Barafu, you continue downhill for about three hours to Mweka Camp (3080m), where you’ll spend the night. Drink plenty of fluids and enjoy a hearty dinner to refuel.

Day 7. Mweka Camp (3080 m) – Mweka Gate (1630 m) – Moshi

Your final day begins with a traditional farewell ceremony from the porters. After about three hours of a comfortable descent through the lush forest, you’ll arrive at Mweka Gate where your driver will be waiting. Upon returning to the lodge, you’ll be greeted with a hot shower, cold drinks, and your well-earned certificate of achievement. Congratulations!

Day 8. Moshi - Kilimanjaro Airport

After breakfast, your driver will be ready to take to Kilimanjaro airport those of you who are flying to Zanzibar or to a home country. For the rest of the travelers, an exciting safari through the best national parks in Africa awaits!

  • Tipping for the mountain crew (recommended amount of $250-350 for the entire climbing program)
  • Optional extra trip to Chemka hot springs with picnic lunch ($35-75 per person, depending on the amount of people)

However, we can assist you with arranging them if needed.
Tipping your driver guide and your mountain crew is a common practice and shows appreciation for their hard work and dedication.
Finally, obtaining a visa and medical insurance is your responsibility, but we are happy to guide you also through these processes, and make it as smooth as possible.
