Day 1: Arrival to Zanzibar Airport. Stone Town

Welcome to Zanzibar! You arrive at the main island of the archipelago in the afternoon or evening from mainland Tanzania after your safari or Kilimanjaro climb (or at any time by international flight from your country).

We pick you up at Zanzibar Airport and transfer you to boutique Zanzibari-style hotel in the heart of Stone Town. For dinner, our driver will escort you to local eatery or to a modern restaurant depending on your choice. We will be happy to arrange take-away dinner delivered at your hotel room, if you arrive very late.

  • Overnight: Shaba Boutique Hotel
  • Meal plan: not included

Day 2: Safari Blue

An unmatched experience for lovers of ocean adventures. You will sail on a dhow, a large traditional wooden boat, to explore the perfectly clear warm turquoise waters of central part of Zanzibar. Explore underwater corals and schools of fish with a mask and snorkel. A little luck, and you will observe playful dolphins and maybe encounter a sea turtle.

You will visit three different paradisal islets. See the mangroves of the Indian Ocean and a giant baobab. Your lunch will be served on one of the islands. You will taste freshly catched and grilled seafood, plenty of Zanzibar flavors, Tanzania beers and exotic fruit, some of which you bet will be a first-time discovery for you. Safari Blue is a truly extraordinary day in Indian ocean.

Our driver will collect you from the harbor and take you back to your hotel. For dinner, explore one of multiple Stone Town’s restaurants for different budget and cuisines, or eat street food for more cultural experience. At your own pace.

  • Driving distance: 51 km
  • Driving time: 1 hr 10 min
  • Activities: Safari Blue (sailing, snorkeling, swimming, seafood and fruit tasting)
  • Overnight: Shaba Boutique Hotel

Day 3: Spice Farm, Prison Island & Stone Town

Spice Farm
After breakfast at your hotel terrace, we will start the day with a visit to the Spice Farm. Spice plantations are the pride and wealth of the Zanzibar archipelago. Zanzibar is one of the world’s largest exporters of spices. Therefore, it will be worthwhile to see how cloves, black pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, cardamom, various tropical fruit and many more grown here.

On this informative Spice Tour, you will also learn the history of the development of this industry in Zanzibar, methods of processing spices, and you can decide to purchase high-quality fresh spices and spice mixes for your culinary experiments.

A delicious lunch of local cuisine with exotic fruit tasting is also waiting for you. As well as a spectacular show – but let us keep a bit of an intrigue for you!

Prison Island
Around midday, we’ll board our minivan and go the seafront, where the next stage of today’s adventure begin. Around 40-minutes motor boat ride will take us to Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, where we will closely interact with the most iconic creatures of Zanzibar, giant Seychellois tortoises, which can be hand-fed with leaves and stroked.

The fauna of Prison island also includes peacocks, fluffy pigeons and dwarf antelopes (duikers). Our guide will tell you the unusual history of the island and the origin of its name.

Stone Town
Your captain will take you back to Unguja, the main island, and, with our dedicated Zanzibar guide by your side, you’ll walk through the labyrinths of narrow streets of the heart of Zanzibar.

Old city, Stone Town, is listed among UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You will see pre-colonial architecture, local restaurants, street vendors, Zanzibar street food, a vibrant market, narrow stone streets and, of course, legendary massive carved doors of Zanzibar. You may take a look at the souvenir shops and jewelry stores to admire the beauty and uniqueness of tanzanites, precious stones found exclusively in Tanzania. Marvel at the colorful paintings of Zanzibar artists, hear about the dark pages of history of the slave trade, see the family house where the Queen’s legend, Freddie Mercury, was born and raised.

At the end of the day you will observe the sunset from one of the Stone Town’s famous rooftop bars. We highly recommend you reserving optional traditional tea ceremony and private dinner in Roshani.

Optional Zanzibar Tea Ceremony
It is held in Roshani (name of one of the architectural styles of the mansion houses of cosmopolitan Zannibar in the 19th century). You will immerse yourself in an atmospheric ceremony, sitting on low chairs and on Swahili-style cushions. You will be introduced to the tea spices, how to mix them, taste three types of tea, and learn about the local tea and coffee drinking culture of Zanzibar, while enjoying them with traditional savoury appetizers and sweets. A step deep into the soul of Zanzibar!

Optional Private Dining in Roshani
In a traditional Roshani private area, you will be treated to 3-course menu and entertained with music, poetry, and the sheer pleasure of beautiful conversation, sitting in a traditional way on the cushions by low tables. The musicians of the Dhow Countries Music Academy also come over during the evening to Roshani to play several traditional Taarab songs.

  • Driving distance: 27 km
  • Driving time: 50 min
  • Activities: Spice Tour; Prison Island; Stone Town sightseeing; Tea Ceremony & Roshani Private Dining (optionally)
  • Overnight: Shaba Boutique Hotel
  • Meal plan: breakfast, lunch

Day 4: Local Deep Sea Fishing

Fishing is one of the truly unforgettable experiences that Zanzibar can offer its guests. Adventure searchers love this special deep sea fishing in the North of Zanzibar with our professional local fisherman who spends most of his time on the ocean!

You can expect a big catch, which may consist of fish such as bonito, barracuda, yellowfin tuna, marlin and other deep-sea fish species.

There are two main sub-seasons:

  • from August to October is yellowfin tuna season;
  • from September to March is a season of striped, blue and black marlin, sword fish.

Throughout the year, you can also catch dorado (mahi-mahi), royal mackerel, barracuda, wahoo.

You don’t need to be an experienced fisherman to join this activity. Even if it is the first fishing trip in your life, you will have a lot of fun, learn several local fishing techniques from our fisherman, feel the whole local flavor and immerse yourself in a daily life of an authentic Zanzibar fisherman.

But wait, there is more! We will organize you a beach lunch with your fresh catch of the day, cooked by a talented chef. Have your meal while enjoying Nungwi beach.

After this, you can extend you stay in one of the hotels of your choice in the Northern coast of Zanzibar, on white-sand Nungwi or Kendwa (we will be happy to assist you with the hotel choice and the booking). We will provide transfer to your hotel.

Or, in case if your vacation days end here, we will provide transfer to Zanzibar airport for your evening flight back home – at no extra cost!
