Let’s hike Kilimanjaro via Marangu Route and reach the altitude 3720 m. Within this trip we will not reach the summit, so this is an ideal solution for those who dream to experience this majestic mountain without spending a week and reaching the peak. Nevertheless, we’ll spend overnight in Horombo Hut – a second camp for the summit climbers, and we’ll walk to Maundi Crater, full of a spirit of adventure. 2 days on Kilimanjaro on this wonderful Horombo Hut hike is absolutely an upscale experience.
Reach an altitude of 3720 m in two days:
Day 1: Moshi – Marangu Gate (1850 m) – Mandara Hut (2700 m) – Horombo Escarpment – Horombo Hut (3720 m)

Our driver will pick you from your hotel in Moshi after your early breakfast (around 7:00 AM). You will be taken to Marangu Gate at an altitude 1850m, where our mountain guide will quickly deal with formalities.
Our hike begins through the dense rainforest, distinctive for this altitude. The flora of this humid Marangu rainforest features towering eucalyptus trees, giant ferns, junipers, sycamore trees, thick moss and lichens. There are a multitude of birds here. Look up into the trees, and you might see (and definitely hear) primates such as blue monkeys, colobus monkeys and olive baboons.
After well-deserved lunch, served at Mandara Hut, our mountain guide will take us higher, to the lower heathland zone, where the vegetation is represented mainly by small shrubs. Keep your eyes peeled for giant lobelias and dendrosenecio kilimanjari, endemics of this mountain.
The trek towards Horombo Escarpment at an altitude about 3700m will take 3 to 4 hours, and will reward us with magnificent views of Mawenzi peak and the summit of Kibo.
On average, 8 to 9 hours and 17 km of trek will bring us to Horombo Hut for hot dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Horombo Hut (3720 m) – Horombo Escarpment – Marangu Gate (1850 m) – Moshi

- Walking time: 6-8 hrs
- Descend: 1870 m
This morning, after hearty breakfast, we will be retracing our steps back to Mandara Hut. A side trip to Maundi Crater will give us a chance to admire the views of Northern Tanzania and Kenya, and it’s volcanic soil with almost complete absence of vegetation will remind us of the long-gone Kilimanjaro’s volcanic activity.
At Mandara Hut steaming hot lunch will be waiting to be served for us. After lunch, we proceed downhill to Marangu Gate, from where the transfer to Moshi town will be provided. In total, we will have hiked for about 17 km today.
Upon prior arrangement, our driver will happily take you to Kilimanjaro Airport for your evening flight to Zanzibar; or to Arusha, from where you can continue exploring African wonders on our far-reaching safari adventure.
